About the Audio Interfaces range

Two-input interfaces such as the Scarlett 2i2 and SSL 2 cover a solo podcaster or a vocal and guitar; four to eight inputs suit a panel show or a small band; 16 and 18 inputs expand with ADAT. Check preamp gain if you plan to use a low-output dynamic microphone such as the SM7B, and check that the outputs cover your monitors and headphones.

Audio Interfaces questions

Do I need an audio interface for a USB microphone?

No. USB microphones have an interface built in. You need an interface only for XLR microphones or line-level instruments.

How many inputs do I need?

One per microphone or instrument you record at the same time. Two is enough for most home setups; a four-person podcast needs four.

Is bus power enough?

Most two and four-channel interfaces run from the USB port. Larger units and those with many phantom-powered inputs use a power supply, listed on the product page.
