About the Microphones range
Pick by the job: dynamic for podcasts, streaming and live vocals; large-diaphragm condenser for studio vocals and voice-over; shotgun for dialogue on camera or a boom; lavalier for hands-free interviews; USB for one-cable simplicity; wireless when a cable cannot be in shot. Each microphone lists polar pattern, frequency response, connector and what is in the box.
Microphones questions
What is a polar pattern?
The directions a microphone hears. Cardioid picks up the front and rejects the rear; supercardioid and shotgun patterns are tighter; omnidirectional hears all round, which suits lavaliers.
XLR or USB?
USB microphones plug into a computer and are simplest for a solo podcast. XLR microphones need an interface or recorder but scale to multiple people and better preamps.
Do I need phantom power?
Condenser microphones with XLR outputs need 48 V phantom power from the interface, mixer or recorder. Dynamic microphones do not. Product pages state the requirement.
