About the Shotgun Microphones range

Camera-mount shotguns run on a small battery or plug-in power and connect by 3.5 mm to mirrorless bodies. Boom shotguns use XLR, need phantom power or a battery, and pair with a boom pole, shock mount and wind protection for exterior work. Moisture-resistant RF-bias designs such as the NTG3 and S-Mic 3 handle humidity that stops other condensers.

Shotgun Microphones questions

Camera-mount or boom shotgun?

On camera is convenient but the microphone sits far from the mouth. On a boom above the frame it sits within half a metre of the talent, which is where dialogue sounds best.

What is RF-bias?

A condenser design that resists humidity and condensation. It is why microphones like the RODE NTG3 and Sennheiser MKH 416 are trusted for outdoor and tropical work.

Do I need a windshield?

Outdoors, yes. The foam supplied handles light air; a furry cover or a blimp is needed in wind. Shotgun wind protection is listed under Microphone Accessories.
