Turntables with a magnetic cartridge output a very low signal with RIAA equalisation applied, so they need a phono stage before a line input. If your mixer has phono inputs you do not need one; if it only has line inputs, or you are recording into an audio interface, a phono preamp fixes the quiet, thin sound you would otherwise get. For stands, check the load rating, the adjustable height and angle, and whether the platform suits your laptop and controller together. Folding stands save space in a car boot between gigs.
The most common mistake is plugging a turntable straight into a line input, which gives a quiet, bass-light signal. The reverse mistake also happens: sending a turntable with a built-in preamp into a phono preamp, which overloads and distorts. Check whether your turntable has a phono and line switch first. Remember the earth wire: most turntables need their ground lead connected to the preamp's ground terminal to stop hum. For stands, place the laptop screen close to eye level so you are not hunched over the controller through a long set.

Do I need a phono preamp for my turntable?
You need one if your turntable has no built-in preamp and your mixer, interface or speakers only have line inputs. If your mixer has phono inputs, or your turntable has a switchable built-in preamp set to line, you do not need an extra unit.
Why does my turntable hum through the preamp?
Hum usually means the turntable's ground wire is not connected. Attach it to the ground terminal on the phono preamp or mixer. If hum continues, route the audio cables away from power supplies and check that the cartridge leads in the tonearm are secure.
Will a laptop stand hold a DJ controller as well?
