About the Recording range

Start with the source and recording setup. For portable recorders, compare the number of tracks and inputs, built-in microphone arrangement, XLR or TRS connectivity, phantom power, sample rate, bit depth, 32-bit float recording, battery life and storage format. Two-channel models suit interviews and simple stereo work, while multi-input recorders handle several microphones or instruments. 32-bit float can reduce clipping from unexpected level changes, but it does not replace suitable microphone placement or monitoring. For processors and effects, check signal type, mono or stereo operation, controls, bypass mode and power requirements.

Check every connection before choosing. XLR inputs are balanced and commonly used for microphones, while 6.35 mm inputs suit instruments and line-level sources. A DI box normally takes an unbalanced instrument signal and provides a balanced XLR output for a mixer, interface or stage box. Passive models do not need power, while active models may require phantom power or a battery. Avoid assuming that a recorder includes microphones, memory cards, batteries, cables or a power supply. This range is organised into Portable Recorders, Processors & Effects and related accessories, so confirm the product page contents and dispatch time.

Recording questions

Do I need a 32-bit float recorder?

32-bit float is useful when recording unpredictable levels, such as live events, location sound or interviews. It gives more room to recover recordings made with levels set too low or too high. It is not essential for controlled studio sessions where you can set gain and monitor levels carefully.

What is the difference between a passive and active DI box?

A passive DI box uses a transformer and does not require a battery or phantom power. An active DI box uses powered circuitry and may need 48V phantom power or a battery. Check the source, required input impedance and available power before choosing between them.

Can I connect a microphone directly to any portable recorder?

No. Check the recorder's input type, connector and power support. Some models accept microphones through XLR inputs and can provide phantom power, while others use built-in microphones or 3.5 mm inputs. Confirm whether your microphone needs phantom power, plug-in power or an external preamp.
