Palmer is an audio tools brand of the Adam Hall Group, making DI boxes, line isolators, speaker simulators and studio tools for stage and recording work. At Electronic Australia we stock two single-channel Palmer DI boxes: the PAN 01 passive DI and the PAN 02 active DI, both used to connect instruments and line sources to a mixer's balanced microphone input.

About Palmer

The PAN 01 is a passive DI with a 6.3 mm jack input, a parallel THRU jack and a transformer balanced XLR output using a 10:1 transformer. It has a 0 or minus 30 dB input pad, handles line and speaker level signals up to +54 dBu, includes a ground lift switch and needs no power. The PAN 02 is an active DI that runs on a 9 V battery or 48 V phantom power. It has a 1 megohm input impedance, a 0 or minus 30 dB attenuator, a THRU jack and a 1:1 transformer balanced output, in a powder coated steel case.

Use the PAN 02 for passive pickups such as bass, electric acoustic guitar and some keyboards, where its 1 megohm input impedance avoids loading the pickup, and make sure your mixer channel supplies phantom power or fit a 9 V battery. Use the PAN 01 for line level sources, keyboards, drum machines or a speaker output, where its pad and +54 dBu input handling help. Palmer's floating ground circuit on the PAN 02 allows ground lift even on phantom power, which helps with hum. You will need a jack lead in and an XLR lead out to the desk.

Palmer questions

Should I choose the Palmer PAN 01 or PAN 02?

The PAN 01 is passive, needs no power and suits line and speaker level sources. The PAN 02 is active, needs a 9 V battery or 48 V phantom power, and its 1 megohm input impedance suits passive instrument pickups such as bass and electric acoustic guitar.

Can the Palmer PAN 01 take a signal from an amplifier's speaker output?

Palmer states that the PAN 01 handles line and speaker level signals, with a maximum input level of +54 dBu and a 0 or minus 30 dB input pad. Always check the amplifier's manual before connecting a DI to its speaker output.

Does the Palmer PAN 02 need a battery if my mixer has phantom power?

No. The PAN 02 can run from either a 9 V battery or 48 V phantom power supplied through the XLR cable from the mixer. Palmer's floating ground circuit keeps the ground lift switch working while it runs on phantom power.
