About the Portable Recorders range

Start with the recording format, inputs and track count. 32-bit float recording can reduce the need to set precise levels before recording, while standard 24-bit recording suits controlled sessions. Built-in stereo microphones are useful for interviews, ambience and quick takes. XLR or combo inputs are needed for external microphones, mixers and balanced line sources. Check whether the recorder supplies phantom power for condenser microphones. Also compare headphone monitoring, USB audio interface mode, battery operation, storage media, size and mounting options.

The range is organised into Portable Digital Recorders and Portable Recorder Accessories. Check the exact model before buying, because input types, microphone capsules, Bluetooth support and track counts vary. A two-track recorder is not the same as a multitrack model, even when both have two microphone inputs. Confirm that your microphone uses the required XLR, TRS or 3.5 mm connection, and check power requirements. Accessories may be model-specific, so verify compatibility with your recorder rather than relying on a similar product name.

Portable Recorders questions

Do I need a 32-bit float portable recorder?

32-bit float is useful when recording unpredictable sources because it provides more flexibility when adjusting levels during editing. It does not replace suitable microphone placement or prevent clipping in every part of a recording chain. For controlled interviews or music sessions, a well-set 24-bit recorder may be sufficient.

Can I connect an XLR microphone to a portable recorder?

You can connect an XLR microphone when the recorder has a compatible XLR input. Check whether it accepts microphone or line level, and whether phantom power is available if your microphone needs it. A 3.5 mm microphone input is not interchangeable with an XLR input without the correct adapter or interface.

What is the difference between a two-track and multitrack recorder?

A two-track recorder records two channels, such as a stereo pair or two separate inputs. A multitrack recorder can record several channels at once, which helps when using multiple microphones or recording a live performance. Compare the number of simultaneous inputs and recorded tracks, not only the number of sockets.
