About the On Camera Batteries range

Start with the battery mount your equipment accepts, then compare capacity in watt-hours, voltage, maximum output and physical size. Watt-hours, or Wh, provide a more useful capacity comparison than mAh alone because voltage differs between battery types. Higher capacity can extend runtime, but it may also increase weight and charging time. Check the equipment's power draw and the battery's maximum current output, particularly when powering a camera, monitor, wireless system or light from one battery. USB-C, USB-A and D-Tap ports can add charging or accessory-power options where supported.

This range is organised by Sony BP-U Series, Sony NP-F and V-Mount. NP-F batteries are also called Sony L-Series batteries and are commonly used in compatible cameras, monitors and lights. BP-U and V-Mount batteries are different formats, even though both are associated with higher-voltage professional video equipment. Do not choose by capacity or appearance alone. Check the exact battery plate, connector, voltage requirements, clearance and accessory compatibility. A battery may fit the mount but still lack the output or communication support your equipment requires.

On Camera Batteries questions

How do I know whether I need an NP-F, BP-U or V-Mount battery?

Check the battery type printed on your camera, light, monitor or battery plate, then match that format. NP-F is also known as Sony L-Series. BP-U and V-Mount use different physical mounts and are not interchangeable without suitable equipment or an adapter.

Is a higher mAh rating always better for a camera battery?

No. Compare watt-hours as well as mAh because mAh ratings depend on voltage. A higher Wh rating generally indicates more stored energy, but the battery must still meet your equipment's voltage, current, size and weight requirements.

Can I charge an on-camera battery with USB-C?

Only if the battery specifically includes USB-C charging and your charger provides the required power. Some USB-C models can also power compatible accessories, but USB-C output does not make every battery suitable for every camera or device. Check the product specifications before connecting equipment.
