About the Shoulder Pads & Mounting range
Choose between a complete kit and components. Kits include a shoulder pad, rods, a camera mount and handles, and are the quickest route if you are starting out. Components suit an existing rig: a shoulder pad with a 15mm dual rod clamp slides onto rods you already own. Check the rod standard, usually 15mm LWS, the camera mounting plate, and whether handles attach by rods, rosettes or NATO rail. Adjustability matters, since you need to move the camera forward or back to balance it over your shoulder.
The mistake most people make is balancing the rig without the full load. Add the lens, monitor, battery and microphone, then slide the camera or shoulder pad until the rig sits level with your hands resting lightly on the grips. A camera sitting too far forward pulls on your arms and tires you quickly, and a counterweight or rear battery plate helps with heavy front-end builds. Model-specific kits fit one camera's baseplate and quick release, while universal kits adapt more widely but may need extra plates.
Shoulder Pads & Mounting questions
Do I need a counterweight on a shoulder rig?
If the camera and lens sit forward of your shoulder, a counterweight or rear-mounted battery balances the rig so your arms are not holding the weight. Lighter mirrorless setups often balance without one when the camera slides back far enough on the rods.
What is the difference between a shoulder pad and a shoulder rig?
A shoulder pad is a single component that rests on your shoulder and mounts to rods or a baseplate. A shoulder rig is a complete setup with a pad, rods, camera plate and handles. Buy a pad alone if you already own rods and handles.
Will a universal shoulder rig fit my mirrorless camera?
Universal rigs mount the camera through a standard 1/4-20 screw or quick-release plate, so they fit most mirrorless and cinema bodies. Check the plate's height adjustment so the lens gears line up with a follow focus if you plan to add one later.
