15 mm rods at 60 mm spacing carry follow focus units, matte boxes and lens supports on mirrorless and small cinema rigs; 19 mm rods at 104 mm spacing carry heavier studio builds. Carbon rods save weight; steel resists flex under heavy matte boxes. Threaded ends let rods extend end to end.
Rods questions
How long should my rods be?
Long enough to clear the lens for a matte box and follow focus, usually 20 to 30 cm on a mirrorless rig. Longer rods add a shoulder pad or lens support.
Aluminium or carbon?
Aluminium is cheaper and stiff enough for light accessories. Carbon saves weight on hand-held rigs. Steel for heavy cinema lenses and matte boxes.
