About the Breakout Cables range

Start with the connector type and signal wiring. A 3.5mm TRS plug commonly carries left and right stereo channels, while two 6.35mm TS plugs provide separate unbalanced mono connections. Check whether you need male or female connectors, then confirm the cable length, measured in metres or feet. Short cables suit close equipment, while longer cables provide more placement flexibility. For mixer inserts, choose an insert cable with one TRS plug and two TS plugs, not a standard stereo splitter. Connector labels, plug size and TRS or TS terminology matter more than appearance.

Breakout and Y cables can look similar but are wired for different jobs. A stereo breakout separates left and right channels, or combines them in the reverse direction. An insert cable sends a signal from a mixer channel to external equipment and returns it through the same socket. Do not assume every 3.5mm connection is identical. Headphone outputs, microphone inputs, balanced inputs and stereo line inputs can use different wiring. Check the equipment manuals, channel assignment and connector gender before ordering. This range is organised by breakout function, connector combination and cable length.

Breakout Cables questions

What is a breakout cable used for?

A breakout cable divides one multi-channel connection into separate connections, or combines separate signals into one connection. For example, a 3.5mm stereo connection can break out to two 6.35mm mono plugs for left and right channels. The correct cable depends on the signal wiring and equipment sockets.

Is a stereo Y cable the same as an insert cable?

No. A stereo Y cable carries left and right channels between one stereo connection and two mono connections. An insert cable uses one TRS plug for both send and return on a mixer insert socket. Although both cables have a Y shape, their wiring and purpose are different.

What do TRS and TS mean on audio cables?

TRS means tip, ring and sleeve, with three electrical contacts. It is commonly used for stereo or balanced connections. TS means tip and sleeve, with two contacts, and is commonly used for unbalanced mono signals. Match the plug type and wiring to the equipment, rather than choosing by size alone.
