Why does my microphone hum through an adaptor?

Usually a ground loop between two powered devices. An isolator or hum eliminator on the line removes it.

Can I plug an XLR microphone into a camera?

A dynamic microphone works through a simple XLR to 3.5 mm adaptor. A condenser needs phantom power, which a camera cannot supply, so use a battery microphone or an interface.
