Fluid Head Tripod or Ball Head: How to Choose
How fluid heads and ball heads differ, what drag and counterbalance do, how bowl sizes work, how to calculate tripod payload, and when a travel tripod or monopod is the better fit.
Short answer Buy a fluid head tripod if you shoot video: its drag and counterbalance give smooth pans and tilts, and a bowl base makes levelling quick. Choose a ball head if you mainly shoot stills and want fast framing in a small, light package. For either, add up the full weight of your rig and pick a head whose counterbalance range, not just its maximum payload, covers it.
A fluid head tripod and a ball head tripod can look similar in a listing, but they solve different problems. This guide explains how each head works, what drag and counterbalance actually do, how bowl sizes fit together, how to work out your payload, and when a travel tripod or monopod makes more sense than a full studio system.
Fluid head vs ball head, and the other options
| Head type | Suits | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid video head | Video, interviews, events, wildlife | Adjustable pan and tilt drag, counterbalance, smooth starts and stops | Heavier, slower for recomposing stills |
| Ball head | Stills, travel | Fast framing with one lock, compact and light | No separate pan and tilt control, camera can flop when loosened, poor for moving shots |
| 3-way pan and tilt | Architecture, product, landscape | Each axis adjusts on its own | Slow to reposition, no drag or counterbalance |
| Geared head | Architecture, macro, studio | Fine, precise adjustment on each axis | Heavy and too slow for following action |
A ball head is fine for locked-off video shots, such as a talking head that never moves. The moment you want to pan across a room or follow a subject, a fluid head is the right tool. Browse photo tripod heads for ball, 3-way and geared options, and video tripod heads for fluid heads.
How a fluid head tripod works: drag and counterbalance
Drag
Inside a fluid head, sealed cartridges on the pan and tilt axes move through a thick fluid. That gives even resistance as you move, instead of the stick-then-jump feel of a friction head. Most heads let you choose a drag level for each axis, plus a zero setting for quick repositioning. Light drag suits fast follows, heavier drag suits slow, deliberate moves. Sachtler lists its aktiv6 flowtech75 system with three drag settings, and Miller's CX2 is listed with 3+0 drag positions for pan and tilt.
Counterbalance
Counterbalance is a spring system that pushes back against the camera's weight when you tilt, so the camera holds position at any angle instead of dropping forward. It is not the same as drag. Drag controls how the head moves; counterbalance stops a tilted camera from falling.
The force the spring must resist depends on the rig's weight and how high its centre of gravity sits above the tilt axis. That is why makers quote counterbalance at a stated centre-of-gravity height, and why a tall rig with a top handle and monitor can need more counterbalance than a low rig of the same weight.
Stepped vs continuous counterbalance
- Stepped: you pick the nearest setting. Manfrotto lists the 504X with steps of 2.2, 4.4 and 6.5 kg at a 55 mm centre of gravity, with a 12 kg maximum load. The Miller CX2 is listed with 16 counterbalance positions and a payload of up to 8 kg, and Sachtler lists 15 counterbalance settings on the aktiv6.
- Continuous: you dial in exactly the right amount. Manfrotto's Nitrotech 608 covers 0 to 8 kg, and the Nitrotech 612 covers 4 to 12 kg at a 55 mm centre of gravity.
Note the 612's range starts at 4 kg. A light mirrorless rig under that weight would not balance properly on it, even though the head is rated for more. Bigger is not automatically better; match the range to your rig.

Bowl sizes: flat base, 60, 75 and 100 mm
Video tripods usually join the head to the legs with a bowl and half ball. You loosen one clamp under the head, tip the half ball until the bubble is level, and lock it. That takes seconds, compared with adjusting three legs.
- Flat base: bolts straight onto sliders, jibs, flat-top tripods or a separate levelling base. Versatile, but levelling is slower.
- 60 mm bowl: compact systems for smaller cameras.
- 75 mm bowl: the common size for documentary, event and mid-size cinema rigs. A 75mm bowl tripod gives you the widest choice of heads.
- 100 mm bowl: heavier cinema and broadcast systems.
Bowl size is an interface, not a payload rating. Two 75 mm heads can have very different capacities. Some systems mix sizes with adapters: Manfrotto lists its Nitrotech 608 kit with the 645 Fast Twin aluminium tripod as having a 100 mm half ball with a 75 mm adapter.
Tripod payload maths
Add every item that moves with the head, not just the camera body.
| Item | Example weight |
|---|---|
| Camera body | 2.0 kg |
| Lens | 1.8 kg |
| Cage and baseplate | 0.8 kg |
| Battery | 0.3 kg |
| Monitor and arm | 0.7 kg |
| Microphone and mount | 0.3 kg |
| Wireless receiver and cables | 0.2 kg |
| Total on the head | 6.1 kg |
With a 6.1 kg rig, a head with a 0 to 8 kg counterbalance range leaves headroom for a heavier lens or a V-mount battery later. Avoid running a head at its maximum all the time.
Also check that the head and legs are both rated for the load, because the lower rating is the real limit. SmallRig lists its AD-01 kit with an 8 kg payload for the tripod, but 6 kg for the included fluid head, so the system is a 6 kg system. If you are building up a rig with a cage, handle and monitor, our Sony camera cage guide covers the options, so weigh the finished rig before choosing a head.
Video tripod vs photo tripod, travel and monopods
Studio and location video tripods
Twin-leg video tripods with a spreader are the stable, quick-to-level choice for interviews and events. The Sachtler aktiv6 flowtech75 MS system is a carbon fibre example: Sachtler lists an 8 kg payload, a 75 mm bowl, a height range of 79 to 174 cm with the mid-level spreader, and a system weight of 6.2 kg. The Manfrotto Nitrotech 608 kit with the 645 Fast Twin aluminium legs is listed at 43.5 to 173 cm and 6.1 kg.
Travel tripods
Travel tripods fold short and weigh less, usually with a ball head or a small fluid head. They trade some height, stiffness and payload for portability. When choosing a travel tripod in Australia for domestic flights, compare its folded length with the 56 x 36 x 23 cm overhead bag size that Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar publish. Anything longer will need to go in checked luggage. Look at tripods with heads for compact kits.
Monopods
A monopod supports the weight while you keep moving, which suits events, sport and wildlife. Video monopods add small feet or a fluid base so they can stand briefly and allow controlled pans. A tilt head such as the Manfrotto 234RC lets you angle the camera without adding a full fluid head.

Questions
Can I use a ball head for video?
For locked-off shots, yes. A ball head holds the camera still for interviews or talking heads where the frame never moves. For pans and tilts it is a poor choice because it has no separate axis control, no drag and no counterbalance, so movement looks jerky and the camera can flop when you loosen it.
What does a 75mm bowl tripod mean?
It means the legs have a 75 mm cup that takes a head with a matching 75 mm half ball. You level the head by loosening one clamp and tipping it, rather than adjusting each leg. It is a common size for mid-weight video rigs, but it tells you nothing about payload, so check the head and leg ratings.
How much payload do I need?
Weigh everything that sits on the head: camera, lens, cage, battery, monitor, microphone and receivers. Choose a head whose counterbalance range covers that total with some headroom, and check that the lowest end of the range is not above your rig's weight. Then confirm the legs are rated at least as high as the head.
Is a travel tripod good enough for video?
A travel tripod with a small fluid head can handle a light mirrorless rig and gentle pans. It will usually be shorter, less stiff and lower in payload than a twin-leg video tripod. It suits vloggers and travel shooters. For heavier rigs, long lenses or client work, a full-size fluid head tripod is steadier.
