About the Speakers & P.A. range

Start with the space, audience size and listening distance rather than peak wattage alone. Compare continuous power, maximum SPL and woofer size to judge usable volume and headroom. A 8 or 10 inch speaker is easier to transport and suits speech, monitoring and smaller rooms. A 12 or 15 inch model generally moves more air for music and larger spaces. Check the input types, mixer channels, Bluetooth, pole mount, DSP controls and whether the speaker can link to another unit.

The range is organised into Powered Speakers and Subwoofers. Powered speakers have an amplifier built in, so they need mains power and a suitable audio signal. Battery models add portability, but runtime depends on volume and features. A powered subwoofer also needs power and normally connects at line level between the source and main speakers. Do not confuse peak watts with continuous output, or assume every speaker includes a microphone, speaker stand, cables or wireless function. Check connectors, dimensions and weight before buying.

Speakers & P.A. questions

What size PA speaker do I need?

Choose based on venue size, audience distance and the type of content. Compact speakers suit speech, monitoring and small rooms. Larger 12 or 15 inch models provide more acoustic output and low end for music, outdoor use and bigger spaces. Manufacturer output and maximum SPL are more useful comparisons than peak watts alone.

Are powered speakers better than passive speakers?

Powered speakers include their own amplifier, which simplifies setup and avoids matching an external amplifier to the cabinet. They still require mains power, unless the model has a rechargeable battery. Passive systems can suit installations or larger rigs, but require compatible amplification, speaker cables and correct impedance matching.

Do I need a subwoofer with my PA speakers?

A subwoofer is useful when music needs more bass impact or the main speakers are being used at higher levels. It is not essential for speech, background audio or many small venues. Check that the subwoofer accepts a compatible line-level signal and that its crossover or DSP settings work with your main speakers.
