About Hoya

Hoya's filter catalogue includes Protector, UV, polarising, Neutral Density, infrared, UV and IR cut, colour, star, soft and close-up filters. Its range also includes square filter systems and filter kits. Neutral Density filters reduce the light reaching the camera sensor, helping photographers use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright conditions. Polarising filters can reduce unwanted reflections and increase contrast in suitable scenes. Hoya also produces filter series with multi-coatings and other surface treatments, depending on the model.

Choose a filter by its purpose and the diameter of your lens's front filter thread. Match the filter size, such as 49mm, 58mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm or 82mm, to the lens, or use a suitable step-up ring where appropriate. Select UV or Protector filters for front-element protection, a Circular Polariser for reflections and sky contrast, and Solid or Variable ND for exposure control. Check whether your setup needs a screw-in filter, square system or compatible holder.

Hoya questions

Where is Hoya from?

Hoya was established in Japan in 1941 as a manufacturer of optical glass. The Hoya Filter Division is associated with Kenko Tokina, which lists its address in Tokyo, Japan.

What does a Hoya UV or Protector filter do?

A UV filter is designed to absorb ultraviolet light and can also provide a protective layer over the front of a lens. A Protector filter is intended primarily for lens-front protection. Check the individual product description for its specific coating and construction.

How do I choose the correct Hoya filter size?

Check the lens barrel or front cap for the filter thread diameter, shown in millimetres. The filter must match this size, such as 49mm, 67mm or 77mm. Step-up rings can allow a larger filter to be used on a lens with a smaller thread.
