About the Video & 3D Graphics Software range
The main choice is between the free DaVinci Resolve and the paid Studio version. Studio unlocks features such as higher resolution and frame rate output, multiple GPU support, noise reduction, extra effects and AI-based tools, and support for more codecs. Check whether your projects need them: if you deliver above UHD, rely on noise reduction or work with codecs the free version does not handle, Studio is worth considering. Also check that your computer's graphics card and memory meet the system requirements for the version you plan to run.
Choose the activation card if you work on one or two fixed computers, since the key activates Studio on a limited number of machines and can be deactivated to move it. Choose the dongle if you move between computers often, because Studio runs on whichever machine the dongle is plugged into. Keep the licence key or dongle safe, as it is your proof of ownership. Download the installer from Blackmagic Design's support site so you start on the current version, and back up your project database before any major update.
Video & 3D Graphics Software questions
What is the difference between the Resolve Studio card and dongle?
Both unlock the same DaVinci Resolve Studio software. The activation card provides a licence key for a limited number of computers, while the USB dongle holds the licence in hardware, so Studio runs on any computer it is plugged into. Pick the format that suits how you move between machines.
Can I open free DaVinci Resolve projects in Studio?
Yes. Studio is the same application with extra features unlocked, so projects and databases from the free version open normally. Moving the other way can cause issues if a project uses Studio-only effects or formats, which will not render in the free version.
Do I need a powerful computer for DaVinci Resolve Studio?
Resolve relies heavily on the graphics card, so GPU power and video memory matter as much as the processor. Check Blackmagic Design's published system requirements for your operating system, and allow more memory and GPU capacity for 4K, 8K or effects-heavy timelines.
