About the Binoculars & Monoculars range

Binoculars are labelled with two numbers, such as 8x42. The first is magnification, while the second is the objective lens diameter in millimetres. An 8x model is easier to hold steady and gives a wider view for general use. A 10x model shows more detail at distance but can be harder to steady. Larger objective lenses gather more light but add size and weight. Also compare field of view, close focus, eye relief, optical coatings, waterproofing and fog-proof construction. If you wear glasses, look for eye relief of about 15mm or more.

Check whether you need binoculars, a monocular or an adapter. Binoculars provide a view through both eyes, while a monocular is lighter and takes less space. Higher magnification can make hand-held viewing shaky, so confirm whether the binoculars accept a tripod adapter. Adapters and tripods must use compatible mounting threads, commonly a 1/4-inch, 20-thread connection, and the binoculars need a suitable adapter point. Do not assume every pair fits every adapter. The range here is organised around binoculars and related binocular or monocular products, with separate adapters for supported tripod setups.

Binoculars & Monoculars questions

What do 8x42 binoculars mean?

The 8x describes eight-times magnification, so distant subjects appear closer than with unaided vision. The 42 refers to the 42mm diameter of each objective lens. This combination is commonly chosen for general outdoor use because it balances magnification, light gathering, field of view and portability.

Are 10x binoculars better than 8x binoculars?

Not for every use. 10x binoculars can reveal more detail on distant subjects, but they usually have a narrower field of view and are more sensitive to hand movement. 8x binoculars are often easier for scanning, walking and general wildlife viewing. A tripod can help steady either magnification.

Can I mount binoculars on a tripod?

Only if the binoculars are tripod adaptable and you have a compatible binocular tripod adapter. Check the product specifications for the mounting provision and thread compatibility before buying. Vortex Sport Binocular Tripod Adapter and Vortex Pro Binocular Tripod Adapter products are intended for supported binocular setups, while Leofoto also offers a binocular adapter.
