About the Wireless Networking range
For Wi-Fi, start with coverage and backhaul. A mesh system uses several units working as one network, and a tri-band router can dedicate a band to linking mesh points, which keeps speeds up for connected devices. Check the Wi-Fi standard, the number of Ethernet ports, and management features such as parental controls, VPN and guest networks. For Bluetooth audio at events, look for balanced XLR outputs, pairing controls that stop guests connecting by accident, and level controls that suit a mixer input.
A common mistake is placing a mesh node at the edge of coverage, where it can only relay a weak signal. Place nodes where they still receive a strong signal from the main router, or connect them with Ethernet. Bluetooth has a practical range of around 10 metres indoors and is blocked by bodies and walls, so keep a Bluetooth audio receiver close to where the source device will be. Bluetooth also adds a small delay, which is fine for background music but noticeable when playing along live.
Wireless Networking questions
What is a Bluetooth direct box used for?
It receives audio from a phone, tablet or laptop over Bluetooth and outputs it as a balanced signal for a mixing console or PA. Venues, churches and bands use one for walk-in music and playback without running a cable to the stage or front of house.
What does tri-band mean on a mesh router?
A tri-band router broadcasts on three radio bands instead of two. In a mesh setup one band can carry traffic between the mesh units while the others serve phones and computers, which reduces the speed loss that happens when a single band handles both jobs.
How far does Bluetooth audio reach?
Expect about 10 metres indoors in practical use, and less through walls, crowds or equipment racks. Keep the Bluetooth receiver in line of sight of the playing device where possible, and move the source closer if you hear dropouts.
