About the Network Cables & Connectors range
Choose the connector type first, then match it to the cable. RJ45 connectors are used for Ethernet and typically have eight positions and contacts. CAT5, CAT5e and Cat6 describe cable categories, not plug sizes. Check the cable category, conductor size, solid or stranded construction, shielded or unshielded design, and whether a strain relief is needed. The plug must accept the cable's conductor diameter and insulation. For field termination, also check that your crimping tool supports the connector design, including EZ-RJ45 products.
Avoid confusing RJ45 Ethernet plugs with the smaller telephone-style RJ11 and RJ12 connectors. RJ11 generally uses fewer contacts for a single phone line, while RJ12 uses six contacts for multi-line systems. An RJ11 plug can fit an RJ12 socket, but this does not make the wiring interchangeable. Check the device, socket and cable before ordering. The range here is organised around Platinum Tools connectors and kits, including CAT5 and CAT5e RJ45 options, Cat6 connector and strain relief combinations, and RJ12 or RJ11 connectors.
Network Cables & Connectors questions
Are RJ45 connectors the same as Cat6 connectors?
RJ45 describes the connector format used for Ethernet, while Cat6 describes the cable category. A Cat6 cable commonly uses an RJ45-style connector, but the plug must also suit the cable's conductor size, construction and jacket diameter.
Can I use a Cat5e RJ45 connector on Cat6 cable?
Do not assume compatibility. Although both use an RJ45-style connection, Cat6 cable can have thicker conductors, different pair geometry and a larger jacket. Use a connector specified for Cat6 when terminating Cat6 cable, and check the product's cable compatibility.
What is the difference between RJ11 and RJ12 connectors?
RJ11 and RJ12 are telephone-style connectors with the same general physical size. RJ11 is commonly used for a single phone line and fewer contacts, while RJ12 uses six contacts for multi-line systems. Check the equipment and wiring before choosing a plug.
