About the CFExpress Cards range

Check the card type first, then compare capacity, maximum read speed and sustained write speed. Type A and Type B are different physical sizes and are not interchangeable. Sustained write speed matters most for continuous bursts and video because it indicates how consistently the card can record data. Higher capacity gives you more time between offloads, while faster read speed can reduce transfer times with a compatible reader. Check your camera's required speed rating and recording format before choosing. A 256GB, 512GB or 1TB card may suit different shooting volumes, but actual recording time depends on resolution, frame rate and codec.

This range is organised by CFexpress Type A and Type B cards, with different generations, capacities and performance levels. Confirm the exact format in your camera manual rather than relying on the brand or appearance. Some cameras require a firmware update before using newer media, and XQD compatibility applies only to selected cameras with the required support. CFexpress cards also need a CFexpress-compatible reader, not an SD reader. Format the card in-camera before use, and check that your camera supports the card's capacity and speed rating.

CFExpress Cards questions

What is the difference between CFexpress Type A and Type B?

Type A is the smaller CFexpress format and uses one PCIe lane. Type B is larger and uses two PCIe lanes, allowing higher potential transfer speeds. They use different slots, so a Type A card cannot be used in a camera designed for Type B, and vice versa.

How do I know which CFexpress card my camera takes?

Check the camera manual or manufacturer compatibility list for the required format, either Type A or Type B. Also check firmware requirements, supported capacities and minimum write speed. Do not substitute a card based only on its storage size, as the slot and interface must match.

Is a CFexpress card compatible with an XQD camera?

Some XQD cameras support CFexpress Type B after a firmware update, but compatibility is model-specific. Confirm support in the camera manufacturer's documentation before buying. A card that fits physically may still require updated firmware, and XQD support does not apply to Type A cards.
