About the External Drives range

Start with capacity. A 1TB drive suits documents, photos and regular backups, while 2TB or 4TB gives more room for video, RAW images and working projects. Portable SSDs are generally faster, quieter and more resistant to movement than external hard drives, but hard drives can provide higher capacities for archives. Check the connection standard as well as the connector shape. USB 3.2 Gen 2 supports up to 10Gbps, but the computer, cable and drive must all support the same standard to reach their rated performance.

Check whether your computer, tablet, phone or camera uses USB-C, USB-A or another connection, and confirm the operating system or device requirements before buying. A USB-C plug does not automatically mean the fastest USB connection. Some drives include cables or adaptors, but confirm what is supplied on the product page. For Mac and Windows use, formatting may affect write access. Capacity shown on the box is not the exact usable space, and a drive should not be your only copy of important files. The range here includes portable SSDs and higher-capacity external hard drives.

External Drives questions

Is an external SSD better than an external hard drive?

An external SSD is usually the better fit for portable work, frequent file transfers and editing because it is compact, quiet and faster. An external hard drive can suit larger desktop archives where capacity matters more than speed. Compare capacity, interface, physical use and your backup needs before choosing.

Will a USB-C external drive work with my laptop?

Usually, if the laptop has a compatible USB-C data port, but the port and cable determine available speed. A USB-C connector describes the shape, not necessarily USB 3.2 or faster performance. Check the laptop specification and the drive requirements, and use the supplied cable or a suitable replacement.

How much external storage do I need for photos and video?

Choose capacity based on the size of your current files, expected growth and backup plan. 1TB suits lighter photo libraries and everyday backups, while 2TB or 4TB provides more working space for RAW images, 4K video and project files. Keeping another copy is important for valuable data.
