About the Drive Enclosures & Docks range

Start with the drive type and physical size. A 2.5-inch SATA enclosure will not accept an M.2 NVMe drive, while a 3.5-inch hard drive usually needs a powered dock or enclosure. Check the connection on the drive, the host port and the advertised transfer rate. USB-C describes the connector, not always the speed. Consider whether you need bus power, an external power supply, one or two drive bays, cloning, RAID, or simple file access. A NAS enclosure also needs network connectivity and compatible drives.

Check the exact interface before buying. SATA, M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe are different standards and are not interchangeable unless the product specifications say so. Match the enclosure to the drive length, such as 2230, 2242, 2260 or 2280 for supported M.2 models. Confirm whether a dock accepts 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch or both sizes, and whether it supports your operating system. The range is organised around external enclosures, powered docking stations, network storage enclosures and installation or rack-mount solutions. Review the product page for dimensions, power requirements and dispatch time.

Drive Enclosures & Docks questions

Will a USB-C drive enclosure work with my laptop?

Usually, if the laptop has a compatible USB data port and the enclosure includes the required cable. USB-C is only the connector shape, so check the enclosure's USB standard, speed and power requirements. A USB-C charging port may not support data, and a fast enclosure will run at the host port's supported speed.

Can I put any SSD or hard drive in an enclosure?

No. The enclosure must match the drive's interface and size. Common combinations include 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or hard drives, 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, and M.2 SSDs using either SATA or NVMe. Check the model specifications before purchase, especially for M.2 key type and supported drive lengths.

Do I need a powered docking station for a 3.5-inch hard drive?

Most 3.5-inch hard drives require more power than a computer USB port can provide, so use a dock or enclosure with its own power adapter. Many 2.5-inch SATA drives can run from USB alone, but requirements vary. Check the product listing and your drive specifications before connecting it.
