About the TRS Phone Jack range
Start with the connector type and application. A TRS plug has Tip, Ring and Sleeve contacts, while a female jack accepts a matching 1/4 inch plug. Use a three-conductor TRS connection where your equipment requires balanced audio or stereo wiring. Check whether you need a cable plug or a chassis-mounted socket, then confirm solder termination, cable entry size and available clearance. Neutrik NP3X plugs suit cable assembly and include strain relief. NJ3FP6C jacks use a D-size panel format and solder contacts.
Do not confuse TRS with TS. A TS connector has two contacts and is used for unbalanced mono connections, while TRS has three. TRS does not automatically mean stereo, because professional equipment may use Tip and Ring for the positive and negative sides of a balanced signal. Confirm the wiring required by the device or circuit. Check that the socket is a female panel jack, not a male plug, and match the product's contact plating, colour code and locking requirement. This range includes Neutrik NP3X plugs and NJ3FP6C locking female jacks.
TRS Phone Jack questions
What does TRS mean on a 1/4 inch jack?
TRS means Tip, Ring and Sleeve, the three conductive sections of the connector. A 1/4 inch TRS connector is also called a 6.35 mm phone connector. Depending on the equipment, it can carry stereo unbalanced audio or a balanced mono signal.
Is a 1/4 inch TRS plug the same as a TS plug?
No. A TRS plug has three contacts and normally has two insulating bands on its shaft. A TS plug has two contacts and one insulating band. They may fit the same size socket, but they do not provide the same wiring or signal configuration.
What is the difference between a TRS plug and a TRS female jack?
A TRS plug is the male connector fitted to the end of a cable. A TRS female jack is the socket that receives the plug, commonly mounted in a panel or chassis. Check the product description and part number carefully, especially when replacing a damaged socket.
