OWON's HDS handheld series combines an oscilloscope and a multimeter in one battery powered unit, an idea OWON says it first released in 2006. The HDS2102S has two analogue channels with 100 MHz bandwidth, 8K memory depth and a 3.5 inch 320 x 240 colour TFT screen. Its 20,000 count true RMS multimeter measures voltage, current, resistance and capacitance. The S in the model name adds a waveform generator producing sine waves up to 25 MHz, square, pulse and arbitrary waves up to 5 MHz and ramps up to 1 MHz. It carries a 600 V CAT III rating.
The HDS2102S suits technicians who need to see a signal away from a bench scope, such as fault-finding power, audio or control lines in a rig or installation. It runs on an 18650 lithium battery for roughly 3 to 6 hours and charges over USB-C, which also connects it to a computer for data transfer and SCPI control. At 198 x 96 x 38 mm and about 0.6 kg it fits in a tool bag. Check that your probes and test leads are rated for the voltages and measurement category you work with before use.

What is the difference between the OWON HDS2102 and HDS2102S?
Both are 100 MHz two-channel handheld oscilloscopes with a built-in multimeter. The HDS2102S adds a waveform generator that outputs sine waves up to 25 MHz and square, pulse and arbitrary waves up to 5 MHz, so one unit can both inject and measure a test signal.
How is the OWON HDS2102S powered and charged?
It uses an 18650 lithium battery, with a stated runtime of about 3 to 6 hours depending on use. Charging is through the USB-C port, which is also used to connect the scope to a computer for transferring data and remote control.
Can the HDS2102S be used as a multimeter on its own?
Yes. It includes a 20,000 count true RMS multimeter that measures DC and AC voltage, current, resistance and capacitance. The unit carries a 600 V CAT III safety rating, so check your leads and the circuit category before measuring mains equipment.
