About Ilford
HP5 Plus is rated at ISO 400/27 and is described in Ilford's technical data as a fast black and white film for action, available light and general-purpose photography. It can be exposed at meter settings up to EI 3200 when development is extended in suitable developers such as Ilford ILFOTEC DD-X or MICROPHEN. The 35mm version is coated on a 0.125 mm acetate base and comes in DX coded cassettes, which Ilford states are suitable for all 35mm cameras. HARMAN also makes HP5 Plus as 120 roll film and in sheet film sizes for medium and large format cameras.
HP5 Plus suits any 35mm film camera, from manual rangefinders and SLRs to automatic compacts. Shoot it at box speed for general use, or rate it higher for low light and extend development to match; pushing adds grain and contrast. It is a negative film processed in black and white chemistry, either at home in a daylight tank or at a lab that develops black and white. If you plan to develop it yourself, you will need a developer, stop bath and fixer, a spiral tank and a changing bag or dark room to load the reel. Store unexposed film somewhere cool and dry.
Ilford questions
Can I push Ilford HP5 Plus to 1600 or 3200?
Yes. Ilford's technical data lists good image quality at meter settings from EI 400 up to EI 3200 with extended development. Expose the whole roll at the same rating and tell your lab, or adjust the development time yourself if you process at home.
Is HP5 Plus processed like colour film?
No. HP5 Plus is a black and white negative film, processed in black and white chemistry rather than the C-41 process used for colour negatives. Check that your lab handles black and white film before you send a roll off for developing.
Will HP5 Plus fit my camera?
The roll we stock is 35mm with 36 exposures, in a DX coded cassette that Ilford states is suitable for all 35mm cameras. It will not fit medium format cameras, which take 120 roll film, or half-frame cameras expecting a different format.
