About Alan Gordon Enterprises
The Color Scene Slate is made from heavy-duty acrylic measuring 11 x 9.25 inches and 1/8 inch thick, with engraved lettering and lines so the layout does not wear away with repeated cleaning. Its colour clapsticks are made from alder wood, and it comes with a mesh bag and a dry-erase marker. A combo slate pairs a writable board for scene, take, roll and production details with clapsticks, giving the editor a visual and audio sync point at the start of each take.
Choose the colour version if you want sticks that stand out clearly in frame, and the engraved combo slate for a classic look. Use dry-erase markers only, since permanent markers stain acrylic. Hold the slate flat to the lens, in focus and filling a good part of the frame, and close the sticks cleanly so the spike is easy to find in the audio waveform. On night or low-light shoots, light the slate briefly so the writing reads clearly for the editor and script supervisor.
Alan Gordon Enterprises questions
What is a combo slate?
A combo slate combines a writable board for production details such as scene, take and roll with hinged clapsticks. Closing the sticks gives a visible and audible mark that editors use to line up picture with separately recorded sound.
What marker should I use on an acrylic slate?
Use dry-erase markers, such as the one supplied with the Color Combo Scene Slate. They wipe off cleanly between takes. Permanent markers and some paint pens can stain the acrylic and leave ghosting that makes later notes harder to read.
Where are Alan Gordon slates made?
Alan Gordon Enterprises lists its Color Scene Slate as made in the USA. The company is based in Burbank, California, where it rents, sells and services motion picture and digital cinema equipment.
