About the Universal Batteries & Chargers range
Check the battery format, chemistry, nominal voltage, capacity and terminal design before buying. AA and AAA rechargeable cells are commonly Ni-MH, while 14500, 16340, 18650 and 21700 cells are Li-ion and require a compatible charger. Capacity is shown in mAh or Wh, with higher figures generally indicating more stored energy, although device compatibility remains the priority. For chargers, compare the supported chemistry and sizes, number of independent slots, charging display and whether the charger accepts protected cells.
Battery numbers describe physical size, not universal compatibility. A 21700 cell is wider and longer than an 18650, while a 14500 has the same general size as AA but a different voltage and chemistry. Do not substitute one for the other unless the device manual specifically permits it. Check whether your equipment requires protected or unprotected cells, button-top or flat-top terminals, and whether it has built-in charging. The range is organised around individual rechargeable batteries and chargers for common cylindrical formats.
Universal Batteries & Chargers questions
Can I use a 14500 battery instead of an AA battery?
Not automatically. A 14500 Li-ion cell is similar in physical size to AA but has a substantially higher nominal voltage than a typical Ni-MH AA cell. Use it only when the device manufacturer specifies 14500 compatibility. A standard AA charger may also be unsuitable for 14500 cells.
What is the difference between an 18650 and a 21700 battery?
A 21700 cell is larger in diameter and length than an 18650, so the formats are not directly interchangeable. Devices designed for 21700 may sometimes accept an 18650 with the correct sleeve, but an 18650 device generally cannot fit a 21700. Check the device manual and terminal style before ordering.
Do I need a special charger for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries?
Yes. 14500, 16340, 18650 and 21700 Li-ion batteries require a charger that supports the correct Li-ion chemistry, voltage and physical size. Ni-MH AA and AAA batteries need a compatible Ni-MH charging mode. A charger designed only for one chemistry should not be used with another.
