About Symply

An LTO-9 cartridge holds 18TB of data natively, or up to 45TB with compression at a 2.5:1 ratio, and Symply quotes up to 400 MB/s native throughput for full-height LTO-9 drives. LTO-9 introduced media optimisation, a one-time calibration the first time a cartridge is loaded. Symply says it averages about 40 minutes and can take up to 2 hours, which is why it offers pre-optimised cartridges that are ready to write. The SymplyPRO desktop range uses a metal enclosure and supports LTFS, so tapes mount like a drive with drag-and-drop file operations. It also offers AES-256 hardware encryption and comes in Thunderbolt, SAS and Ethernet versions.

When building an archive, work out how many copies you keep and plan cartridges accordingly, since many studios keep two tapes of every project in separate locations. Pre-optimised cartridges save waiting time when you are writing lots of new tapes, while standard cartridges suit workflows where optimisation can run in the background. Check the drive's connection against your computer before ordering: Thunderbolt suits most Mac edit bays, and SAS needs a compatible host adapter. On Mac, Symply's SymplyATOM software handles formatting, mounting and firmware updates. Symply drives also work with backup applications such as Veeam, Veritas NetBackup, Commvault, Archiware P5 and Hedge Canister.

Symply questions

What does pre-optimised mean for LTO-9 tapes?

Every LTO-9 cartridge goes through a one-time media optimisation the first time it is loaded, averaging about 40 minutes and sometimes taking up to 2 hours. Pre-optimised cartridges have already been through this step, so you can start writing straight away.

Can an LTO-9 drive use older tapes?

Symply states that LTO-9 drive mechanisms can read and write LTO-8 cartridges, the previous generation. Older LTO generations need a drive that supports them, so check which cartridges are in your existing archive before you move to LTO-9.

Do I need backup software to use a Symply LTO drive?

Not necessarily. With LTFS, a formatted tape mounts on your computer and you can drag and drop files much like an external drive. For scheduled backups and cataloguing, the drives also work with applications such as Archiware P5, Hedge Canister and Veeam.
