Spectrasonics is a music software developer based in Burbank, California. Its virtual instruments run as plug-ins inside a DAW or as standalone applications on Mac and Windows. About Spectrasonics
Omnisphere 3 is a synthesiser built on a large factory sound library, with granular synthesis, wavetable morphing, FM and ring modulation, eight LFOs and twelve envelopes per patch. You can import your own WAV or AIFF audio as a sound source, and more than 300 hardware profiles let synths and controllers from makers such as Moog, Korg, Roland, Sequential, Nord and Novation control it directly. Keyscape takes a different approach: 36 restored keyboard instruments, multisampled in detail, with over 500 patches. Examples include an LA Custom C7 grand piano, a Rhodes Mark I, a Wurlitzer 140B and a Hohner Clavinet, plus Duo patches that layer two instruments.
Choose Omnisphere 3 for pads, textures, basses and sound design, and Keyscape when you need realistic acoustic and electric keyboards. If you own both, Keyscape appears inside Omnisphere as a satellite instrument with an extra library of more than 1,500 patches built for it. Check your computer first: Spectrasonics lists a 2.4 GHz processor, 8GB of RAM (16GB recommended for Omnisphere 3) and a 64-bit host. Omnisphere 3 needs 64GB of free drive space and Keyscape 80GB, or 30GB for its Lite install. Both can live on an external SSD formatted to a modern file system rather than FAT32, and a MIDI keyboard controller makes them easier to play.
Spectrasonics questions
Can I use Keyscape inside Omnisphere?
Yes. When both are installed, Keyscape appears in the Omnisphere browser as a satellite instrument, giving you Omnisphere's Live Mode, Stack Mode and synthesis controls on Keyscape sounds. Keyscape also works on its own as a plug-in or standalone application.
How much drive space do Omnisphere 3 and Keyscape need?
Spectrasonics lists 64GB of free space for Omnisphere 3. Keyscape needs 80GB for the full library or 30GB for the Lite install, which keeps a smaller set of instruments aimed at live performance. Both can be installed on a secondary or external drive.
Do these instruments run on Apple Silicon Macs?
Yes. Spectrasonics states that Omnisphere 3 runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 13 or later, and on Windows 10 or later. Keyscape is also 64-bit native on Mac, including Apple Silicon, and on Windows.
