Kenderdine is the name behind Kenderdine Entertainment Lighting (KEL), a theatre and live performance lighting business in Auckland, New Zealand, that sells, hires and supplies stage lighting. Electronic Australia stocks Kenderdine 5-pin XLR DMX data leads, male to female, in 5, 10 and 15 metre lengths for connecting lighting consoles, dimmers and fixtures.

About Kenderdine DMX

The leads we stock have 5-pin XLR connectors, male at one end and female at the other, the connector used for DMX512 on many theatre consoles, dimmers and moving lights. KEL lists its 5-pin DMX leads with all five pins wired, 2-pair double shielded cable using both foil and braid, and black connectors with clear heatshrink over a label area so each run can be marked. Standard DMX control uses pins 1 to 3, and wiring the second pair means the lead also suits equipment that uses pins 4 and 5.

Pick the length that covers the run with some slack for tidy cable dressing. The 5 metre lead suits links between fixtures on the same truss or bar, while the 10 and 15 metre leads cover runs from the stage to a control position or between lighting positions. Run each lead from the female DMX out socket of one unit to the male DMX in socket of the next, and fit a terminator at the last device on the line. If your fixtures use 3-pin XLR DMX, you will need an adapter at each 3-pin connection.

Kenderdine DMX questions

Can I use a microphone cable instead of a DMX lead?

It is not recommended. Microphone cable is built for analogue audio, while DMX data is designed to run on 120 ohm data cable. On long runs or chains with many fixtures, the wrong cable can cause flicker or fixtures that ignore commands.

What does M to F mean on these Kenderdine leads?

It means one end has a male XLR plug and the other a female XLR socket. This lets you chain leads end to end, or run from a DMX output on a console or fixture to the input on the next fixture without gender adapters.

Do these leads work with 3-pin DMX equipment?

Not directly. These leads have 5-pin XLR connectors at both ends. To connect equipment with 3-pin DMX sockets you need a 5-pin to 3-pin DMX adapter at each point where the lead meets a 3-pin socket.
