iLok is the USB authorisation key system from PACE Anti-Piracy, a software security company based in San Jose, California. Audio software developers use it to store plug-in and application licences on a physical key. Electronic Australia stocks the third-generation iLok in USB-A and USB-C versions for music production and post-production computers.

About iLok

An iLok holds software licences on the key itself, so you can move them between computers by plugging it into whichever machine you are working on. The third-generation keys hold up to 1,500 authorisations, three times the capacity of the previous generation, and transfer data at twice the speed. They have an aluminium casing that PACE says will not split or crack from normal use. They are backward compatible, so software written for a second-generation iLok works on a third-generation key. Zero Downtime protection is designed to keep your licences accessible if the key is lost, damaged or stolen.

The two keys we stock differ only in the connector. Choose the USB-A version for computers and hubs with standard rectangular ports, and the USB-C version for laptops that only have USB-C ports, which avoids an adapter hanging off the side of the machine. Before buying, check that the software you use offers an iLok USB key as a licence location, as some products only allow computer or cloud activation. On a laptop, a short USB extension lead or hub keeps the key out of the way of knocks. If you already own an iLok, a second key lets you split licences between two computers.

iLok questions

What is the difference between the iLok USB-A and USB-C keys?

Both are third-generation iLok keys with the same capacity of up to 1,500 authorisations and the same Zero Downtime support. The only difference is the connector, so choose the one that matches the ports on the computer you use for audio work.

Will software licensed for a second-generation iLok work on these keys?

PACE states that the third-generation iLok is fully backward compatible, so software developed for a second-generation iLok continues to work on a third-generation key in either USB-A or USB-C form. Check each developer's transfer rules before moving licences.

What happens if I lose my iLok?

Third-generation iLok keys support Zero Downtime protection, which PACE says keeps your licences accessible if the key is lost, damaged or stolen. Check how Zero Downtime is set up on your iLok account before you rely on it for a session.
